To improve reading comprehension and speed, read of variety of genres. Most people read textbooks at a slower speed than fiction or poetry. Variety in your reading selection will increase your familiarity with different types of materials and improve vocabulary, comprehension, and speed. Another helpful practice is to boost your vocabulary by focusing on root words, prefixes, and suffixes. This method will allow you to form words and decipher unfamiliar words. Taking a literature course is also helpful; it will expose you to various authors, styles, and vocabulary usage.
Math skills may be enhanced by making sure you know basic arithmetic facts without using a calculator. This simple step speeds up your ability to do mental calculations so that you can focus on formulas and problem solving. If you are a visual learner, draw pictures and charts. You can also create your own word problems to make sure you understand and can apply what you have learned.
In the classroom, ask questions and summarize lessons. Take notes even when given an outline. If you learn better by listening, ask the instructor if you can record classes. Outside of class, use a daily schedule to manage study time. Allot enough time to complete assignments, attend study groups, and seek assistance.
